Mazda Turbo (Turbocharger) and Engine Problems

October 19, 2012
By: Robert Silverman

According to the calls coming in, Mazda CX 7 and CX 9 drivers appear to be having turbo (turbocharger) and engine problems, and to make matters even worse, the manufacturer is trying to point the finger back at the consumer.

Our clients have experienced a number of Mazda engine problems, including illuminated engine warning lights, oil burning, excessive smoke from the tailpipe and/or a foul odor (especially during a cold start). Many are having repeat failures with their Mazda turbocharger being replaced numerous times. Others are reporting oil consumption problems and severe engine noise.

Even when under warranty, Mazda dealers are asking consumers to present all oil change and service receipts prior to service to confirm they are maintaining the vehicle according to warranty prior to fixing any Mazda turbocharger problem. Failure to produce proof of service could result in Mazda denying warranty coverage. Kimmel and Silverman Founding Partner, Lemon Law Attorney Bob Silverman has seen this in many of the cases he has handled and feels this type of conduct is outrageous and a clear breach of warranty.

We are also seeing Mazda dealers fail to properly include the customer’s complaints on the repair orders in an attempt to “cover up” the turbocharger issue. As we have reported before, every time you take your car in for repair, it is essential that you receive a repair invoice which outlines the problem and the dealer’s fix. Keep these invoices in a safe place, along with oil change and service receipts. You never know when you are going to need to provide proof of service.

If you are having Mazda turbocharger or engine problems, it is important for you to fight for your Lemon Law rights. If your Mazda turbocharger or engine problems results in your car being in the shop repeatedly or for an extended period of time, or if you are being denied warranty coverage, contact us to find out about your rights under State Lemon Laws and Federal Warranty Statutes. The only thing you have to lose is your Lemon.

    Hello
Is there a lawsuit pending with Mazda regarding engine failure? I might not be the best candidate, as I didn’t keep any records of my oil changes. I only had it serviced once by a professional, and the others were done by me. But, at the end of the day, my car’s engine blew at 105K. I assume these isn’t much I can do… but, according to the dealership, the VVT (known issues) failed and caused the chain to slip which caused the loss of compression

    • #2 Ashley says:

      My turbocharger failed at 18000kms!

I have thrown a rod at less than 55k. I have most of my records but not all. They are fighting us every step of the way. Since I have purchased my cx7 in May of 08. I have had my ac compressor changed twice, VVT replaced and now this. If I have all records except for year 2011 shouldn’t that be enough?

my cx 7 is a 2008 and my car is in the shop as i type this today. 38,000
miles on the car. The dealer is replacing the turbo. As I read all the complaints, i must say that this car is a nothing but a pile of junk. What is the next step of getting help related to this car

After a lot of leg work Mazda replaced mine. Not to crazy about having a rebuilt but i figured it cant be any worse than the original one. It took 3 weeks to get it back but seems to more power. The scary part is warranty only good for 8 months.

My 2007 CX-7 has roughly 160k on it. It smokes badly when you try to accelerate quickly (floor it). In the first year I had it, the dealer did all of the maintenance since I had the insurance coverage for maintenance. They replaced the turbo, motor mounts, A/C (twice), an various other parts. I had an issue, once with my Bose system radio/CD changer on/off button. The dealer told me it was an easy fix and they would only charge me $25 to do it. When I got the car back, the satellite radio no longer worked and the CD player no longer worked (with CDs stuck in it). I took it back and was told that they couldn’t have caused the issue and it would be $700 to fix it. After I complained vehemently, they reduced the price to $250. That was the last time I took it to a dealer. I wrote many letters to Mazda with no resolution. I even called the dealership and was put on hold for an hour before someone just hung up on me. My CD player/changer still doesn’t work. They also did all the oil changes for the first 20k. Last year, I got a letter stating that there was a recall, for what I can’t remember, it may have been brakes or drive train related. I called Mazda to set up a time to have it addressed. I was told that since my car has so many miles on it, it was not covered and if I wanted the recall addressed, I would have to pay. This car has been a piece of crap since I’ve gotten it.

My engine light came on in my 2007 CX7…took my car to the dealership on Sept 9th 2103… 2 months later, I still don’t have a car. Turbocharger/ Engine are shot. I purchased an extended Warranty in 2010 when I purchased the car for $2,500.. Only for them to refuse to pay for the damage to my turbo/engine. Can you guess why they denied my claim? Yup… Negligence on my end.. due to lack of maintenance/oil changes. They say that the excessive sludge in my engine is my fault, and I need to produce 3yrs worth of proof of oil changes. Yea… Let me ask my husband for those receipts.. We appealed the Warranty co’s decision.. and was denied again. The past two months have been Hell.. and it’s absolutely ridiculous that Mazda isn’t owning up to the fact that they have a malfunction in their CX7 Engine’s.

Yes! Add me to that! I am getting ready to pick up my car from the shop….gettings it’s 2nd turbo replacement! I have 104k on it. 2007 model. I have oil records though but, by the time they extended the warranty I was just outside the mark. My mechanic just told me that it might be a good time to look at getting rid of it! grrr. I would LOVE to get in on a lawsuit against Mazda. I should have pushed further the first time I took it in and asked about the pinging in the engine years ago….the response from the dealershp was “They all sound like that!”

Had the 70 mile check up… Had to point out to them to replace the stretched timing belt which I had asked them to check twice already. Asked them to check everything that the warranty covered. They said they did and everything was fine. Come to find out they didn’t replace the turbo sensor relay or several other things that are included in this check up. Oh and did I mention once I started taking it to the dealership for oil changes I had to go back each time to get something they failed to put back in or on…. Like 4 of the 5 or 6 bolts that hold the skid plate on. Anyway, I have their paperwork showing everything was fine. Around 4-6k miles later the turbo went out. This was a minor noise I had questioned 3-4 times already. Now they have had it over a month and they still haven’t returned my last 6 messages.
I can show a trend of incompetence at the local dealership.
Only now its at the Irvine office and I’m waiting. I want a replacement, compensation for 4 weeks of inconvience and I just got on disability and the stress is making several of my des eases flare up more frequently.
I bought it used… Called the local dealership to let them know u had it so any recall or issue notices could be sent to me.
I was getting ready to trade it for a new 6 model but, after this customer service I will never own another and u am going to spead the word as much as possible.
This is a serious mechanical issue that should have been a recall not a 5k mile warranty extension. Not toy mention what percentage if customers have been notified that thus vehicle needs to be parked and run for 4 minutes prior to turning it off. It’s my understanding this is the only way to have a chance at the issue not burning up the turbo.
This is gross negligence and they have misrepresented their vehicle
                      PLEASE HELP

Replaced turbo 6 months ago, car sounds horrible. Oil leaks, told roughly 1200 to fix as the entire engine needs to be lifted. Not to mention the poor quality paint.

Bought my 2007 CX-7 used in 2011 with 84,000 miles on it. Time chain assembly was to have been replaced prior to my purchasing the vehicle, as it was the first thing I heard on my test drive. Sales person told me “Thats what an engine sounds like, hun” as I had my head stuck in the engine compartment. My response was not pretty.
I drove it without issue for 2 years, and I now have 135,000 miles on it. Just before Thanksgiving 2013, guess what goes? The timing chain assembly. I took it to the Honda dealer I had purchased it from, and they promptly had it towed to Mazda, stating they “didn’t want to open a can of worms”. Great.
So, Mazda dealer comes into play. They replace my timing chain assembly to the tune of just over $1,000. Yay. I should be good, right?
                          Wrong.
Car dies the day after I pick it up. Thank goodness it died at work in my parking lot. AAA is able to get it jumped. Mazda tests my battery and its “just fine – just needs a good charge.”
                          Right.
Next evening on my way home from work, notice my headlights are flickering. I brought it directly to Mazda. They replace the battery this time. $150.

Two weeks go by, I’m feeling pretty good. We’re getting ready for a 600 mile treck north for Thanksgiving with the family. My turbo blows. Luckily I was right down the road from the Mazda dealer when it happened. Service managers face was priceless when I drove it into the garage. Turbo replaced. Just over $3,000. Anyone else keeping track of this? Because I am, as I watch the money bleed out of my account. And all of this while trying to recover after being out of work for a year.

That brings me to today. I brought my car in for an oil change and to have the check engine light checked out. Turns out, the thermostat was bad. Ok, I said – replace it. $330! Cheapest fix (other than the battery) so far! Yay! I can do that.
I pick my car up tonight. Drive about five minutes down the road and notice I have no heat. Odd. So I turn around, ready to bring it back in and kindly request that they check my car out first thing in the morning. As I’m heading back to the dealership, the car overheats. FABULOUS! It wasn’t doing that before! I was not kind when I went back in. This vehicle has been nothing but heartache and trouble for the last three months, and has drained my finances. I’m not in the position to replace it, unfortunately and I’m feeling a bit stuck to say the least.
I have a loaner (very cute CX5 that they couldn’t say enough nice things about until I reminded them that it was still a Mazda), but I am at my wits end. Are there any paths for those of us who purchased one of these vehicles used?

Bought my 2007 CX7 new in Oct 2006. Absolutely loved it ….then starting hearing the ticking noise in the engine on cold starts around 56K. Went to the Mazda Forum and read up on all the complaints and nightmares with the turbo, VVT and sludge. Then I had an “uh oh” moment ….maybe mine is about to go, too. Also read, just this week, that the 2007 CX7 Turbo was #1 on the WORST used car list at wholesale auctions as the majority of them have engine problems. Did some further checking and read that Mazda is blaming the customers whose engines have blown even though the customers provided maintenance records from Mazda dealerships. The extended warranty, from what I understand, is useless in these cases. I also spoke to a friend that owns an independent shop who was a former Mazda service manager ….he suggested to get rid of it while I can. I was thinking about a CX9 to replace it, but after hearing of all the nightmares with Mazda warranty, I traded it just this week with a competitor. They gave me $7500 for my CX7 which is near what some customers are quoted for engine replacement. I loved my CX7 ….but didn’t want to get stuck with ridiculous repair bills even though I had another year on my extended warranty. Mazda … you lost a customer. Shame on you for not taking care of your CX7 owners. I’m glad I dumped mine while I had the chance.

My 2007 CX-7 had all of the problems above. We HAD all of our oil changed but a couple done AT THE Dealership where we purchased the car…but because I didn’t get my oil changed exactly at 3K miles every time, they refused to make good on the smoking tail pipe issue…because it was ‘out of warrany’ by a couple of thousand miles EVEN though they serviced the car every time and should have watched for those issues. I paid out of pocket for that repair…NOW…last night the turbo went completely out in the car.
It has 116,000 miles and we have taken very good care of it.
This issue with the turbo needs to be a recall on the 2007!! I love the car and in fact, bought a 2012 CX-7 too. Now…I wonder if that issue was fixed or if it’s just a matter of time for that car too.
Anyone get any help from the Lemon Law people?

I was in love with a used but as good as new 2008 cx7. After reading all of the above complains, I’m completely dispointed about Mazda, so that’s not acceptable in such a brand.

I wish the best luch for all of you guys.

I own the 2007 Mazda CX7, purchased it in Feb 2008. Mine was the showroom model car and it has been nothing but trouble for me for the past year. I am on my 2nd air conditioning compressor, and Mazda will not honor the letter they sent me in 2010 for replacement. The first compressor went up in May 2013, 2nd just replaced May 2014. Have had to replace the ignition coils for multiple random mis-fire’s. Now for the past 2 weeks nothing but white smoke coming from tail pipes when I drive. after reading everything on this list I am hopeful to get this car out of the shop for the 5th and final time in 4 weeks and take it right to the dealer for a trade. I loved this car, but it has become an unreliable vehicle. All maintenance work was done by the dealer up until 2 years ago, now I take it to my local trusted mechanic. I have all my receipts for oil changes and services. Just fed up with the issues.

This is the 3rd Turbo and I got it back from the Mazda dealer and the next day my check engine light was back on. Took it back and they said it needed a system upgrade. Got it back and the next day the check engine was back on. Now they say I need a new engine and provide all my oil changes; which I did three weeks ago with the 3rd turbo being replaced. This is ridiculous. I have 89,000 and it expires in Aug or 95,000.

It was constantly in the shop, always having loss of power, had smoke constantly blowing from the tail pipe, we called it our own smoke screen. No matter how often we took it to the dealership they NEVER found anything wrong with it. They could never “reproduce” the problem. I think once they blamed the place who did the oil a month before and they replaced the O2 sensor a few times. They always swore they was no engine or turbo issues. However it got around great im the snow, other then that it was the biggest piece of junk I ever owned. I will Never buy another Mazda.

So, we have a 2007 cx7 grand touring…..approx. 125000. We had the timing chain replaced, and had 2 turbo replacements. The CEL light was on and we had the dealer check it recently when we took it in for the recall for the emissions. We were told the CEL was because it had “low oil pressure” and that we needed to “replace the engine”. Talked with a few other people in the know …..So, we then went to Auto Zone and purchased a approx. $11 bottle of Seafoam. Put 1/2 in where you put the oil in and the other 1/2 in the gas tank…….within a day…..no more CEL light and runs like new! Were told that a screen had probably gotten gunked up (due to the engine issues, etc) and the seafoam cleaned it off and sealed up anything else that might have been there. This is now (thankfully) and extra car in our family that we don’t have to rely on but, it is paid for and we are happy that it seems to be working right again. Might be worth a try for others of you.

Was told each time that they couldn’t reproduce the problem and had no clue what it could be. The last time they even told me that because I do my own oil changes and they aren’t “documented” that they would have to change my oil before proceeding after which they again told me that they couldn’t reproduce the problem. 2 days ago my oil was due to be changed again so I figured id have them look at it yet again and to everyone’s shock “a large amount of smoke was coming from my engine and oh yeah now it’s knocking too.” I was furious that these problems had not been brought up to me until I personally looked into forums and posts such as these to discover the problem. I am now told I need a new engine that it is too far gone to try to fix with a vent kit. I bought this vehicle brand new in 2009 upon returning from a deployment to Afghanistan with the idea that it would last me through college. I guess that was a false hope. 5 year old car with 80,000 miles needs a new engine?! Simply crazy to me. If anyone has any advice id appreciate it. It’s a shame mazda is acting this way. Was a huge fan… As of now will never purchase a mazda again and I’ll be sure to let as many people as possible know how irresponsible they are as a corporation.

This past week sitting in the drive way waiting on the kids it reved up to 5000 RPM. Time and time again. I cleaned the trottle body this time. There was no build up. I checked for vacuum leaks as it was reving up nothing. I’m at a lose. There for mazda tryed to give me the run around again thelling me its my fault that the throttle body was dirty and how the system works. I got news for them. I’ve taken good care of the car but the $3500+ to fix everything wrong with it turns me completely upside down it. This is just enraging. Of course I’m supposed to be moving next week just to ice this cake… I was hoping Mazda would work with me but after reading through various forums it doesn’t sound like I should be too optimistic.

I live in Florida and public transportation is not fun.I have a 2007 Mazda cx7 and once again the turbo has failed. I have only had this car for 1 year and 2 months worst car I have ever invested in.mind you I just replaced an oil leak a few months ago that cost me $580 and just replaced the compressor 3 weeks ago $760.00 and I still owe money on this car. Mazda has to do something about this this is unexceptable. They need to admit that this is a LEMON car.

The previous owner spent over $3k for that repair. I thought I would have a good car for another 100k miles. Unfortunately, after 10 k miles the engine started vibrating and the Mazda dealer said the timing belt was stretched and replaced it. Since that I realized the engine was nat manufactured well and should be recalled. I started to measure oil level every 100 miles and noticed that the engine burns more oil that normal. I hope there is an attorney who will take Mazda to court.

I had my AC replace on warranty because it went out on a trip and then continuous problems with the check engine light on b/c of the ERG valve, and then the thermostat went out and had to replace that. Now I have compression issues with the Turbo engine, and now they are looking at the VVT valve to see if it’s that. I just finished paying off the car and it’s not at 100,000 miles yet, but I have a precertified vehicle and Jim Ellis Mazda is currently looking at it today. If they can’t fix anything under warranty what should I do? Please help, I don’t want to put anymore money into this car, it’s cost me a fortune.
                                                                    Thank you, Cristina

I took it by Mazda and they told me that the timing chain, VVT and other timing devices needed replaced. I contacted my dealer and they use Firestone to do their work. The mechanic they had do it did it by the book and they found the issues online for me. I’ve had the car since May 22, 2014 started with 111K on it and now it has 120K and been fixed once and then 2 days before Christmas 2014 the car started making noises. Since the car was fixed within 2 months of purchase and paid for parts and I paid $275 labor. Now I had my mechanic look at it for me and it’s not only the CEL P0012 still and it never went off but I’ve talked to Firestone and dealer many times and even without threatening to take the dealer to court did I get any response for them to look it over again at of course Firestone who did the work. My mechanic gave me a statement on the issues and the turbo is whining and now I find this site. I hope the dealer will uphold the original contract with the “check engine light” and the knowledge of this site will trade/swap my car out with me.

My 2007 CX 7 Grand Touring Mazda which I bought at CarMax with only 2000 miles on it in August of 2007 ONLY has 56,500 miles as of today, December 30, 2014 and is UNDRIVEABLE according to Carmax who gave me this “wonderful” news when I took it there to sell it on December 26, 2014. They offered $4000 for the car, $2000 less than the previous month. I slowly drove back home praying all the way that the values and rods would not break and cost me several thousand more dollars on top of the $2000 estimate.

One month ago, I took this car to Finger Mazda in Greenville to have two software issues done which was covered by Mazda. I have an inspection check off list from that Mazda dealership which says I need new rear brakes and rear tires……..EVERYTHING ELSE WAS OKAY including the ENGINE. That same day, I decided to go to Carmax down the road to see what they would give me for the car. They said $6000 and NO ENGINE issues were discussed. Knowing that this car was a ticking time bomb, I made arrangements for someone to follow me to Greenville and give me a ride home before the Carmax 1 week offer expired. I KNEW I had to take that enormous LOSS because of the problems CX 7 owners have documented and the behavior of Mazda toward the owners.

I live 70 miles away from Greenville. Unfortunately, my ride home cancelled on me at the last minute, and I could not make other arrangements before the one week $6000 offer expired. That is a low bid for the car under any circumstances.

On December 26, 2014 I took the car to Carmax one month later which was last week. Now Carmax says the engine is broken and not to even RISK driving it off their lot !! They offered me $4000. I just learned that it will cost me $1400 to $2000 to have the timing chain issue fixed. The Carmax appraiser did say that if I got it fixed they would give me the $6000. I thought that was mighty generous of them. ?? I get it. Spend $2000 and now get $6000 for the car. What a nice guy!!
Thank you Carmax. I paid more for the car when I bought it from them because of their “125 point inspection” took out the risk of buying a LEMON !!!!!! And now Carmax does not want to touch this car with a TEN FOOT POLE. I do not have to tell you where that “pole” is sticking today. Bend over Carmax and Mazda owners.

56,500 miles on a car I now own outright which I BOUGHT from Carmax and financed through them. They owned the car until last year. I was the registered driver and got the title mailed to me after my last payment from Carmax.

Mazda says they mailed me the bulletins. I never got them because mail is NOT delivered to my house and the DMV does not have my p.o. box. And besides, legally, Carmax finance owned the car. You would think that EVERYONE would have been notified.

However, in reading about the excuses Mazda makes up for not honoring that extended warranty, I seriously doubt that they would have paid a dime.

I am totally in for any class action lawsuits.

I did notice that when XM was offering free broadcast for a week that I could not receive any signal. So far the turbo seems to be working except……..well…..I cannot drive the car. So there is sits in my driveway. I do not have the money to get it fixed.

Fast forward to February 2014 85000 miles took the car to the dealer after receiving recall notice, issues with smoke emitting from tailpipes, and acceleration issues. I was told that I needed timing belt adjustments and a new turbo. I had the car towed to spouse job because repair was over 4k and I had just returned to work due to a medical disability. Needless to say a 1.5 months later finally had car towed back to same dealer to make the repairs since now it had been 7 months of paying for a car that was not drivable.

The first major issue was the HID ballasts for both headlights failed, within 1 year of each other, which cost $400 each to fix. Next came the timing belt followed by the turbocharger several months later. Both happened right after the warranty expired and were very expensive to fix. Come to find out the previous owners had it replaced in march 2013 right before I bought it and never informed me. Well mazda covered it since there was a parts warranty on the turbo and it blew at exactly 1 year from the first time. So, now march 2015, turbo blows again! I have an extended warranty. .. 3 weeks later, they deny my claim, I contact mazda and mazda says it blew 12 months and 5 days from the second replacment and it is only a 12 month parts warranty! So, NO ONE WANTS TO PICK UP THIS TURBO REPLACEMENT. I have provided receipts for my last oil changes as requested, proved that I maintain the car, even the mechanics told me that there was nothing I could have done to prevent this since I have done every possible maintenance on this car! They were shocked that my claim was denied by my extended warranty and by mazda! Isn’t there a problem here if in 2 and a half years this car has blown 2 TRANSMISSIONS AND 3 TURBOS! ! that is more than coincidence. . And they are trying to blame the owner, but that’s impossible because I have done EVERYTHING by the book to avoid these problems! What do I do now? I want to get rid of the car, but I can’t afford to, I also can’t afford to fix it!

The latter blew the turbo and Mazda denied the claim, so i took it to my friend and we ended up replacing the Ventilation Kit, the turbo seals and the Oil feeder Bolt; all of this ended up costing me $600 in parts and a whole day of work, i had the Repair Manual and since my mechanic friend was there, we replaced the whole ordeal of parts and now its running like a champ.

Took my car to dealership when check engine light came on. Car was still under warranty, but I didn’t realize an extended warranty was issued for the Turbo. They did not inform me of this when the car was in for the check engine light. I believe this to be fraudulent. My car put me down in heavy traffic in a very inconvenient side of town during rush hour on a Friday evening. It’s in the shop now to have timing chain tension tighten as it was hitting the cover. How can we the consumers file a class action suit against Mazda Corp?

Last week my 2007 CX-7 at 82k miles also experienced timing issues and suffered internal engine damage. It is currently not drivable and it would cost $8k to replace the engine with another one from a salvage yard. Here is another data point that these engines have inherent flaws and us consumers were not notified and nothing was done to prevent this kind of frustration, inconvenience, and outrageous out-of-pocket expenses; no one expects a modern engine like this to just suddenly self-destruct like that.

I took care of my car but noticed a rattling noise when starting it & occasionally the white smoke issue. Received recall notice 01/2012 for heavy white smoke & L3T engine variable valve timing noise & Timing chain noise. I think I had less than 40,000 miles on the car. I was refused the recall repair due to missing a couple of oil change receipts. I questioned the dealership as to why I had to have all the receipts & was told flat out no recall repair without the receipts. Needless to say, Jan 2015 with less than 61,000 miles the engine blew. I now have a $30,000 yard ornament or $6,000 out of pocket expense to replace the engine. My Zoom-Zoom doesn’t even putt-putt. Absolutely sick! I would happily join any class action lawsuit!! I’ve spent so much money on fixing this piece of junk and have been banned from my local Mazda dealership bc they “fixed” my car after $3,000 (VVT, Sensors, etc) when it turned out to be spark plugs after it still wasn’t running right. I can go on and on. 6 months later and another $3000 my turbo went out. And there is more going back to about a year after I bought it. I’m going on 8 years… Just waiting to pay off my husbands truck or that it completely does before I buy a new car that’s not Mazda.

One morning it would not start so I replaced the battery. The car started and thought it was fine. The next day it won’t start even though it is trying to turnover. After a few attempts, there is no compression in my engine. My mechanic said he has never heard of a car losing compression so quickly. He says my timing chain slipped so he bought a new one from Mazda, which he said is very flimsy and not worth the money. He also said the intake valves need to be replaced and the head gasket. Replaces these, which he said were impossible to remove, and still won’t work. The car has only $85,000 miles and he is telling me the turbo charger might need to be replaced. He also said when he looked under the hood, it seems like half of my car parts are new as if the former owner replaced these parts already. Trying to dump the car but owe more than it is worth. Mazda should pay for making such a worthless piece of metal.

At the beginning of 2015 – the Oil Cooler needed replacing because of a “gasket” that couldn’t be replaced. Mazda knew of this prior to selling it – but failed to inform me. I ended up spending $600 to replace the oil cooler through my mechanic. Just changed the oil at 69,000 miles in January, and March 7, drove almost 100 miles to a funeral – checking all my fluids prior to hitting the road. On my way back – I hear a whistling from the engine – and the next day – my car starts smoking – white smoke from the tail pipe. My mechanic says it’s the turbo. Mazda wants to charge me $130 to put it on diagnostic machine – and IF it’s covered by the Certified Used Car Warranty – they would reimburse me and paid to fix the turbo. But it’s not something that covered by the “Extended Warranty” – neither was the oil cooler! WTF?!?!?! This is the second time the turbo has gone out in 11 months. We have only had this vehicle for two years and it’s been in the shop, on average, every four months. This car is an absolute lemon. Continual problems and an utter disappointment. We traded in an Expedition to get a more economical vehicle and it was great for about 5 months, then the shop came to know us on a first name basis. We’ve had the mass air flow sensor go bad twice in a year and a half, ac needing service twice in two years, driver side window motor go out, fuel injector go out, belt replaced, turbo go out twice in the last 11 months. Now, they won’t replace the current blown turbo that’s still under warranty because, in their words, there’s sludge build up and the car is overdue for an oil change. They want all maintenance records for the last year, which I don’t have, and have stated if I cannot produce them the vehicle warranty is void. The cost to replace the turbo, mass air flow sensor, oil feed line, and labor is approximately $3500. I don’t have that kind of money lying around to spend on a car repair that’s hardly worth it and should still be under warranty. I’d love to trade it in, but I owe too much. Don’t have any idea what I should do. This is a complete ripoff and injustice, but these people don’t care. Open to suggestions.

Bought used. Dealership said nothing about any past issues, which now I am certain they knew about. I replaced the turbo at 90,000 uncertain whether it had already been replaced. The problems keep on coming though. Still goes through oil constantly, makes odd noises when accelerating. When I start the car cold the whole engine rattles. The car is worthless now, however, so it is pointless to trade it in. I owe more on it than it is worth. Mazda appears to have no problem selling lemons to people.

At the time of purchase the dealership at the vehicle listed at 80800 or so miles. However the odometer indicate 60800 or so miles. The vehicle now has under 65,500 miles on the odometer. This past Saturday 07/09/2016 the engine developed a skip and the check engine light came on. Drove the vehicle this way for about 2 miles until I got home. I also noticed that the vehicle had lost quite a bit of power. I have a code reader and found the fault code to be P0302, misfire in cylinder 2. Changed all the spark plugs and #2 coil. Made no difference. Monday I drove the vehicle to a local repair shop to diagnose and repair the problem. Late this afternoon the shop owner called me and provided the following information. The #2 cylinder had low compression. Without taking the engine down for an inspection, he believes that the timing chain may have slipped out of proper timing and that a valve in the #2 cylinder either bent as a result or is burnt. Checking with Mazda, the head for this engine is on back order for another 2 weeks. a new complete engine is not available. If the block is okay, the cost of placing the timing chain and head would be in the neighborhood of $3,000. I contacted the local Mazda dealer and spoke with a service rep. After explaining the symptoms I was told the following. That the 08 2.3 engine has been known to have this problem. That this was the initial production of this engine being equipped with a turbo and that the engine components would eventually fail due to this pressure. To replace the complete engine, parts and labor would be about $8,000. That is what I paid for the car before tax and tag. Monday the upper portion of the engine will be disassembled. If the block has not been affected, they will purchase a new head when available and timing chain components. Hopefully these parts have been improved on and that the cost will not exceed $3000. Lesson learned, my first and last Mazda. I would rather own a VW even though they are guilty of mileage tampering. At least their vehicles do not suffer from major engine failure.

I would really like to know if there is anything, that can be done as of today, and would really appreciate any help. I have been doing my own maintenance on the car. In a week and a half I’m going to be replacing the timing chain, turbocharger, and water pump. If there’s anyway I can hold Mazda accountable for what they have done, or even simply be reimbursed for parts and labor. I would be happy. I’m in the car has a total of 67 recalls so it is a pain, but cars aren’t made to last forever they’re made to breakdown. The Mazda did take it a little far this time… Also if anybody would like to know, there is only one recall out of the 67 that is still active today. That is what they informed me of any way. It has to do with the evaporative emission control.

Shortly after buying, I experienced white smoke from the exhaust when idle, which I was told was “a turbo seal leak” and a “known problem” with the turbo engine… Their solution was free synthetic oil changes. At 3 years (~30,000 miles), the transmission died and needed to be replaced under warranty. No other major issues until this year, when it had a big oil leak and the repair costs me ~$900. Now, I notice idling issues where the care feels like it’s about to stall. Took it into the shop and they did a diagnostic noting “dark oil with metal shavings in it indicating internal engine damage”. Recommending flushing the fuel system, but referring me to a dealer… Hopefully this isn’t my engine going now. Has anyone successfully had Mazda cover these seemingly known issue outside of warranty?

It only has 69K miles on it. Has had more CEL’s than I can count; many for minor issues, many under warranty. When I first bought the car, I noticed a noxious odor and black smoke from the tailpipe but was told that was “normal.” Eventually, that stopped but my concerns about the car never have. This week I took it in for a CEL which was P0012. Ended up paying $2K for a new timing chain and oil control valve. I was told that my oil was low even though I just had it changed and only drove approximately 1200 miles afterwards. Also, the battery which is approximately 6 months old had “corroded” battery terminals. I’m not a car person but I did fight the dealership successfully to perform an expensive repair at 38K miles that they claimed was out of warranty because of the amount of time I owned the vehicle. I will say this. I don’t trust this car and rarely drive it over 50 miles from home because I don’t want to be stranded. Considering the low miles, even though this is an 07, it should be in much better condition without all of these repairs. Needless to say, I will never buy another Mazda no matter what the reviews say. The mazda dealership repair people are good guys but I’m sure they’ve been instructed from above to push owners off as much as possible. I hate the idea of selling this car to an unsuspecting person who just wants a reliable used car so if the engine doesn’t blow, and I’m ready to sell it, I won’t ask KBB price. I’m just hoping it holds up another 30K miles which is about 3 more years given my driving needs.

Fell In love with the car rode fine. In December of 2015 as I was going to work the car shut off right in the middle of the express way. I turned it back on and got safely off the expressway and somehow made it to my job, byTurning it off and on. The next day morning I got it towed to Mazda and they said that the timing chain need to be replaced. They replaced it and it cost me roughly $400 . Car ran fine until oct 2016 that’s when the car wouldn’t start. It just clicked and clicked and light flickered. I read to hold the key for 15sec and the car would start and it did. Now tonight as I was leaving dinner with some friends. My check engine light came on and flashed rapidly. The car sputtered and the check engine light remained on. Waiting for road size service right now.

Just a 1 year or 3,000.00 mile warranty which ever comes first. And only told to keep using synthetic oil when I get oil changes. Which I have done on a regular basis for 6 years. What should I do now that I see the overwhelming dissatisfied Mazda customer with the same aggravating problem and the fact that Mazda corporation is not acknowledging this serious matter. I welcome any suggestions as to how to recoup my cost or join the customers on a lawsuit

Plus the car has recalls that needs to be fix.

The turbo has gone out twice, fuel injectors have gone out twice, driver and passenger window motors both have gone out, AC had to be fixed, mass airflow sensor replaced. It is a 2011 model and we bought it used in the Spring of 2014. It has literally been in the shop on average once every six months since we bought it. We have put at least twice as much money into it to do repairs than what it’s worth and I feel like I need to find a tall cliff to introduce it to. Not gonna do that of course, but it’s awfully tempting. Did I mention that I contacted the Mazda rep in my area, Melody Tobert and she denied us on every attempt to get help, but she did offer us a discounted price on a new Mazda. Are you freaking kidding me!!!! That pissed me off more than the actual problems. She’s an absolute idiot and Mazda is a piece of crap vehicle. I’ll never buy another one.

Took it to the dealer I bought it from…they mentioned turbo but told me to take it to Mazda Dealer to get diagnostic testing. The result…told me my engine is “Sludged” and I need a new one. Cost for new $13k. It’s a 2010 Mazda CX7. I still owe $12k. They will give me $500 for a trade. Great

The light came back 4days after I pick the car I went back they said I have drove the car for 400 miles so anything can happen between that time. And is the same problem they told me they fix. I haven’t had this car 6mos and they said nothing is covered under the warranty. When I purchased it last July it was in the shop 4 days after purchasing it cuz there was noise from the rear they said it wasn’t the brakes it was the rotors so they replaced them and that was under warranty. So I’m confused why I have a warranty and they want to charge me $2400 to fix everything this is ridiculous that I”m having this problem and I haven’t had the car this long and nothing is covered. I don’t know what to do now.

Have had multiple issues including the VVT chain replacement. 3yrs ago the first turbo blew without warning while on the Hwy and it caused the engine to fail. A year later the 2nd turbo failed, 3 weeks after the warranty expired on the first replacement. Last year, I had the front differential rebuilt after the housing cracked. Then just recently, I had a gas smell in the cabin, took it to the dealer and they could not find anything. Then again on the Highway, the car starting knocking terribly and the CEL came on. Stopped had it towed, a fuel injector had popped loose. Now the car is back and its making a noise like the 3rd Turbo might be failing. Have all service records for the life of the vehicle. Oil changes, transmission changes. Can’t afford to buy a different vehicle and this one is bleeding my dry. Will never purchase a Mazda product again.

We have not used this dealership for maintenance because of poor service and lack of trust, however, we do keep our car well maintained and do keep the records. Dealership gave us back a Full Circle Inspection which included leaking oil cooler ($785). Before taking it in for recall service, our car did NOT leak any oil. We get it home and our driveway is FULL of oil drops! Also, the air bag light now goes on while driving the vehicle! We also immediately noticed a high pitched whine from the engine when accelerating which we did not hear previous to service. I made an appointment with dealership for today to bring it back in. First thing they said to my husband is that there would be a diagnostic fee! Nope, not paying that! We just picked it up and they said that they could not find out why the airbag light is now going on – they said they retraced their process and didn’t find anything they had missed, but, they could do a diagnostic check to figure out the issue if we paid them $105!!! The high pitched noise is the turbocharger going out and it would be $1900 to fix that!!! We didn’t even mention the oil leak – why bother? We just picked up the car and now need to figure out what to do next! Is there recourse we can take? Or do they just get away with this? Our car went from perfectly fine, to now having to probably dump it and get a new (NEVER MAZDA AGAIN) vehicle!

I left our home and went to Florida for the winter because of all the sad memories of him being on hospice and dieing at home. Had just enough money to buy a used car for a used car dealer in Florida. Which he knew what I went though for 3 years of watching my husband suffer. So I purchased a used Matilda CX 7 2007 from him and not even a week later, it’s making all this noice, come to find out, the turbo is gone and leaking oil everywhere. Has been in a repair shop for over 2 weeks now. I am without a car, alone in Florida with no family. I’m completely overwhelmed now. There has to be a some recourse on this horrible action happening with all these Mazda’s and having all these people having problems with Mazda!!

Oil is spewing all over took it to a dealership and they told me it was gonna cost over $7000.00 (just for parts not including the cost of the hourly Mechanic )to repair. Didn’t know anything regarding any issue’s with a Mazda. Promise to never purchase another Mazda ever again. Actually i’m unable to purchase any car I still owe on this one.

Not once had I been told that there was a turbo charger on this vehicle. I got all oil changes, however never kept receipts. I have since been told that my turbo Charger has went out. costing over $6000 to repair. I had been told from the workers at Brown and Wood that it was because I get my oil change from Walmart!!!! Pure Pathetic!!!!!! I still owe $8500 on this vehicle and talking about a $6,000 repair? smh someone should be able to do something about these people.

I have about 122K miles on the car and has lasted really well since I’ve had it. I recently took in to get fixed and went to firestone that said it was either the transmission, belt or gasket leaking. I did the dye test and felt like they could not even figure it out as gave me 3 scenarios of what it could be. About a month later my check engine came on and I took to another mechanic and was told is actually the turbo as the turbo uses and is leaking engine oil and told the smell spreads to the air conditioner and leaves black smoke out of exhaust. Apparently the oil can build up and eventually cause more issues with engine. I was given two options, to trade in or replace turbo. So I am having the turbo replaced but I feel if these are Mazda original parts that they should be a fault especially if causing a smoke smell into the cabin which is being inhaled by the driver. Def our of warrenty though.
