Pennsylvania and New Jersey-based Consumer Advocacy Firm Honored For Efforts
PHILADELPHIA (June 1, 2002) lemonlaw.com, a website which offers a wide range of consumer information on Lemon Laws and Breach of Warranty statutes, was recently honored during the American Bar Association (ABA) Midyear Meeting held in Philadelphia.
As a result of their efforts in creating and updating the site, Robert M. Silverman and Craig Thor Kimmel, partners with the Lemon Law and Consumer Advocacy Firm of Kimmel & Silverman, received meritorious recognition in the 2002 Louis M. Brown Legal Access Competition. Kimmel & Silverman, with offices in Ambler, PA and Haddonfield, NJ, handles cases on behalf of consumers with defective automobiles, trucks, boats, motor homes and computers. In the past decade, the Firm has provided cost-free legal assistance to more than 18,000 consumers across the tri-state region.
LemonLaw.com was recognized for promoting preventive law and includes a number of user-friendly features, including a lemon survival kit with tips on how to deal with service managers, a lemon dodger worksheet to prevent purchasing a lemon car, recent news stories, lemon links to other useful websites, and a list of the best and worst cars on the road, according to the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration.
"Technology holds tremendous potential to the delivery of legal services for individuals with modest incomes," said Mary K. Ryan, chair of the ABA Standing Committee on Delivery of Legal Services. "The Lemon Law website is a model for how the internet can provide improved access to legal information."
"We strive to constantly provide updated information and new features to distressed consumers," said Firm Partner and Automotive Consumer Advocate Craig Thor Kimmel. "LemonLaw[dot]com provides us a platform where we can help educate and increase awareness regarding consumer rights."
The Louis M. Brown Legal Access Competition is sponsored by the ABA Standing Committee on Delivery of Legal Services, which is dedicated to improving the delivery of services to those with moderate incomes who do not qualify for legal aid yet lack the discretionary income to pay traditional legal services. The award is named in honor of Louis M. Brown, the founder and chair of the National Center for Preventive Law, for his 60-year dedication to expanding access to legal services.
In addition to recognizing Kimmel & Silverman, the committee honored Civil Justice, Inc., a network of solo and small firm practitioners based out of the University of Maryland; the ARAG Group, which administers legal advisory plans in all 50 states; and the Norman, OK based law firm of Velie & Velie, which offers immigration law services.
The American Bar Association is the largest voluntary professional membership association in the world. With more than 400,000 members, the ABA provides law school accreditation, continuing legal education, information about the law, programs to assist lawyers and judges in their work, and initiatives to improve the legal system for the public.
