Volvo XC60 & XC90 Oil Consumption Problem Oil Problems Leave Volvo XC Drivers High & Dry

By: Robert Silverman

On the heels of the oil consumption issues we continue to see with Audi and Subaru, we are now fielding calls on the 1 800 LEMON LAW hotline from Volvo XC drivers who are seeing their low oil lights lighting up with regularity.

The Volvo oil consumption issue has caught up with mostly Volvo XC60 and XC90 drivers who  are complaining of dry dipsticks and repeated oil messages.  If you are suffering with a Volvo oil consumption problem, the matter should not be treated lightly.  Make sure you return to a Volvo authorized dealer as soon as possible to discuss the problem with your service adviser.  Chances are you may be asked to return every 1,000 miles for an oil consumption test.  They may also ask for a copy of your oil change records.  (It is essential that you keep all oil change records in your glove compartment or in an easy-to-find file.  They are first thing dealers ask for when they are investigating oil consumption or engine sludge cases.)

If you are returning regularly to a Volvo authorized dealer to address this oil consumption issue, or if parts are being replaced to fix the issue, hang on to your repair invoices.  If you are in three or more times for the Volvo oil consumption problem under warranty, fill out our Get Rid of Your Lemon form so we can review your situation and determine if/how we can help.  If we can help, potential remedies could include a new car, a complete repurchase or significant monetary compensation, even if the car is fixed.  And best of all, the legal help is 100% cost-free.

If your Volvo is leaving you high and dry, take action and use the Lemon law to get back on the road to recovery.

If you reside in New Jersey, New York, or Pennsylvania, we specialize in helping you! We also work on lemon law cases in many other states around the country.

    Hello,
I have purchased a 2013 Volvo XC60. The Oil light just came on after 3000 miles. I checked the level and it was a quart low. I added it myself to keep from hurting the engine, but plan to take it to the dealer this week. After doing some research, it appears that this is a common design flaw in this particular vehicle. The catch to all of this is that I purchased the car through a military car sales program in Germany. I am wondering if there are any Lemon Laws for Americans living overseas on U.S. orders, who purchase U.S. spec vehicles through these programs.
    Thanks,
    Ron

Hi, less than a week ago, I bought a used 2011 Volvo XC60 with ~27,000 miles on it. The oil light came on today, which I found strange, so I decided to research and i found out that this is a known issue. My question: do lemon laws not apply after a certain mileage? I’m just trying to collect as much info as I can. BTW, I bought the car in Virginia, but I live in MD. Any advice you could provide would be great.

        Thanks,
        Paul

@Paul: If you are in repeatedly for this problem (four or more times), there may be a case under the Federal Magnuson Moss Warranty Act. Keep all invoices and call 1-800 LEMON LAW once you are ready to file a claim

          • #5 Volvoforllife says:

Paul, If you’re doing your oil change at 7500 keep receipts and make sure the people who are changing it know the right amount of oil. If these engines get overfilled they consume oil or if you let it over pass it’s oil change.

My 2012 XC60 is experiencing the oil consumption problem, 2 months after I got the car at 2,000 miles, brought the car in, they said it was a computer glitch and needed a new dip stick, at 21,000 miles the oil light again, now at 27,000 miles, 2 qts low.It has always been taken to the dealer for scheduled maintenance .Calling the service advisor, they told me that Volvo is aware of a problem and that it could be the pistons , I am bringing the car in next week .They will need it for a week and are giving me a loaner .

              • #7 Mark says:

I have a 2012 Volvo XC60. I purchased it new. We have a service agreement, so we bring it in to the dealer every 7,500 miles. Once at 10,000 miles and again at 40,000 miles, the low oil light has come on between oil changes and we have had to add a couple quarts of oil. The Volvo service department at Weaver Brothers Volvo in Raleigh have repeated stated that this oil consumption is NORMAL. I am nearing my warranty expiration and am trying to get the dealer to fix it.

                • #8 Ashton says:

These oil consumption issues are known dealer wide. There is no software glitch. I work for a Volvo dealer as a tech. To clarify this, once you bring the car in for this issue they are supposed to go through the prior approval process immediately. Not fill you up with oil and wait for you to return again. This is from Technical Journal 24643. Turbo 3.2 I6 engines are prone to bad cylinder heads and or camshaft covers, 3.2 I6 non turbo engines are the same as the turbo models problems but also have issues with the piston rings not sealing properly. All of these issues are known to happen within the first 30,000 miles. Know your rights as a consumer. If you are unable to come to any resolution call Volvo of North America about your dealer.

my xc60 from 2011 islow mileage….after three additiona of oil before service dates, dealer has Volvo approval to take the car and do some repair they say ill take three weeks. I have been offered a loaner. seems like a major deal to take so long. should I keep this car?

I own 2015 XC60 T6. On about 3500 mile & 5 mo old, LOW ENGINE OIL warning came up. 1.5 qt burned away since new. My dealer is following the aforementioned TJ 24643 and resealed the cam cover only at this time.

I am going to closely watch the oil consumption issue and follow up with my dealer. I hope this isn’t a strike one as they have two more shots to address this issue before I pick up the phone.

6k miles on our 2015 Volvo XC V70 and twice now the low oil light. First time the dealership said it may have been a low factory fill….but now they have been instructed by Volvo North America back east to remove the head and check cylinders…. the dealership is being very accommodating (larger loaner from the sales fleet to allow for transport of our working dog) but to be honest, I don’t want this service track record on our radar at all…even if it gets “fixed”. With a wave of a magic wand I just want another brand new car without this issue! Am I being too much of a pessimist by worrying about future problems despite (and assuming) that this issue gets fixed??

                              I purchased a volvo xc 60 t6 in feb 2014.
After a few moths and about 3500 miles the oil light came on. Pulled into a parts store and picked up the same castrol synthetic oil and put it in, almost a quart.
                              Now here is the story!!
Don’t let these people tell you at the dealership or from volvo this is normal, it’s not!!
                              This a new car!
This is synthetic oil. It is not supposed to burn ANY measurable oil before the next service.
We took the car back, they kept it for over a week, saying they were sending data to volvo, and waiting for replies. After almost 2 weeks they said it was fixed and that the engine (camshaft cover) was not sealed properly at the factory and it sucked oil into the Pistons…
I told them that this was now on my vehicle record on my brand new investment and my car was now worth substantially less at resale. In fact a dealer would use that info against me regarding the value at trade in. All this info is documented against your car. They said to get my car, I said give me a new one or my money back. They said to go to hell, and I put the entire story on consumer reports, yelp and the BBB!!
In a few days they said, we will give you a new car. We have now had it for about 5 months, 6k miles and the engine oil light just came on!!
These volvos have problems, it’s more than just the engine sealing being defective. It has to be more. The first car sucked my time, days of it. Now I have to do it again. Don’t let them bs you, demand your money back and don’t take a new car and do it all over, and get it out on the net!! There is something big wrong withe se cars.
Don’t be pushed around and destroy your investment.
                              Thanks

Wow. Thanks for the post Scott. Ironic on the timing….since my first post the dealer came back with the EXACT diagnosis as you have outlined above.

Now…for my story!! I, too, was uncomfortable with this situation for the exact reasons you state above, of which I communicated to the service manager. Even still, I reluctantly agreed to take the leap of faith, trust the repair and they would extend my warranty….I was also clear that if it or related issues cropped up again we would be having a very different conversation. So, just yesterday I went to pick up my vehicle and got less than 3 miles away and the check ENGINE light came on and the car began to idle very roughly. I limped back to the dealer…left the car running and got back into the loaner car that hadn’t yet been moved from the spot I left it…. the service manager then called me an hour later and said they ran the diagnostics and they found some “debris on one of the sensors”… Car was up and running but they would keep it overnight and run it again today. Uh. No thanks.

I went into the dealer first thing this AM and said…I’m out. Fluke or not, unrelated or not, my confidence in the repair was now gone if the mechanic did shoddy clean up work that caused this new mechanical issue that left me unsettled about the quality of work on the repair itself (side note that they put over 30 miles on the car after the cam cover repair but this happened within 3 miles of me driving it? Good thing I wasn’t on the highway with my kids in the car!). This on top of me being very uncomfortable with this whole cam cover shambles to begin with…I want a new vehicle. Service Manager has been supportive from the get go…but I know he can only do so much…he explained the process (dealership sales, dealership management, North American Volvo rep) but didn’t know how long or involved it would be…. that was this AM. My gut tells me this is just the beginning… a hassle is an understatement!!!

What has the dealer said about now your new vehicle with the oil light???

Thanks again for sharing your story… makes me feel (only slightly) better!

                                    From scott,
The dealership has had the car since I wrote the other note.
After a week the sales manager sent me a note saying they forgot to have us sign the service request!!
I contacted him back and said it wasn’t there for service!!
It was there for you guys to figure it out and keep the piece of crap and give my money back.
I was told a few things at the dealership from a few people I know there.
Volvo has really messed up on these engines. They are replacing the engine in xc60 t6 with a different engine, one from an older model due to problems with this one. In fact, I was told that they were changing many of the engines because of many problems with the other volvo cars. He felt that they were going to have more problems because the engine they were told they were changing to, isn’t strong enough for the bigger cars.
Heck, we test drove all the cars above the xc60, and they drove like slugs now!
They have done nothing to contact me in another week and the sales manager just texted because I contacted the salesman and asked what the hell is going on and and the sales manager said the volvo car company was contacting me. And that’s it.!
The guy I know in service said “you don’t need to get an oil change with volvo, you just ad oil”, he said that is a common statement with all the mechanics.
The sales manager told me that the first car I returned was sold and people are happy with it. I said “so what, what does that have to with anything”. I asked if the dealership reported the repair to car fax? Since they are a subscriber to them, I also asked if the people that bought were told of the repair. He said he didn’t know on both. I am checking on both. I’m calling the attorney general, giving them the vin number and asking them to contact them to contact the owner and asking the owner to contact me and find out..
Now I don’t know what’s going to happen.
Maybe I can go to Sweden to talk to a Chinese national that owns the company.
I think they bought volvo to learn how to make really good cars, doesn’t seem to be working out to well.
                                    Thanks,scott

I have a 2011 Volvo XC60 T6 that experienced the oil consumption issue at 40k miles. The dealership replaced the pistons and rings. Now it has happened again at just shy of 60k miles (just before the warranty expired). Volvo has authorized the dealership to replace the engine. I am concerned the same will happen with the new engine so I asked Volvo to extend the warranty to 100k miles. Have you seen them do this for other customers? I am really concerned with keeping this car with risk of further engine problems out of warranty but am worried the trade in value will take a hit due to the history of the car. Any other suggestions would are welcome.

I bought a used 2007 xc90 v8 sport model with 76,000 miles. Had it in countless times for service low oil light came on and they said it’s fine after having it in. Than it happened again and I called in. They said being it in. Said it was a dipstick issue. Than again said it was a oil level sensor issue (they replaced both). Drive it 3 thousand miles and low oil light comes on. I called on very disgusted with this update. They said it was normal. So I drove it another 500 miles and now the red add oil now light comes on. I took the car in and said I wanted to get it of this car as it was a time bomb. I convinced them to buy it back with me eating about $4000 dollars after doing is about 16000 miles. I wasn’t happy but felt I had no choice. At least I was free of the problem. Pa I thought. I purchase a 2011 xc90 with 75000 miles and Volvo certified pre owned designation to be sure of have no problems. I drive it 4000 miles and the low oil light comes on. I call in again in frustration. They say to bring it in. I take it on they say they need to do a consumption test. It takes about a week. They said they had to give the car a tuneup and replace the Pistons. Since this happened I feel as if the car just doesn’t feel the same. Hard to explain. I’m also really concerned that once my warranty is out that this will happen again. Same Motor new pistons. Not sure why the same issue won’t happen down the road.

After diagnosing the problem, and a 6- month wait the dealer has re-sealed the camshaft cover. Only 2 months and 4K miles later the oil level warning light came on again. This time the dealer told that volvo has decided to replace the engine. That’s probably the best outcome.

Mine is a 2012 with 55K miles on it–bought it with 18K on it. Oil consumption problem started almost immediately. Wish they had told me about the problem before I bought it. Been in three times–but to the dealer’s credit, they’ve known about the problem, have been watching the oil consumption and corrected the problem with no cost to me. My question is, if there continues to be a problem, following the fix, what are my rights as a consumer?

Volvo just released a new TJ on this. Apparently the fix is an ECM update and a new dipstick. Seems odd considering they were replacing engines, camshaft seals an pistons up until April. The dealer had no idea why this ECM update would fix the problem. My suspicion is that the ECM update simply increased the threshold for the low oil message, and the dipstick allows for more oil loss to be “normal”.

My 2010 XC 60 T6 just had the low oil light come on for the first time at 65K miles (just out of warranty) and I’m worried that this may be a bigger issue. Taking it in for service at the dealer this week. If it is a bigger issue is there anything I can do?

JL, you are right. I just went through the same thing. I have a 2011 XC60 and it’s been in twice so far for low oil. The first time it was 2.5 quarts low and the second time it was 1.5 quarts low. My car was in the shop for a week, and all I got was the new “upgraded” dip stick. What a joke! The dip stick sits higher and they added more oil than it calls for, so that when the oil is low, the light won’t come on so quickly. They aren’t concerned about why it is burning oil. All they care about is that the light doesn’t come on in between oil changes. It pretty much sucks, as I thought, as did many others, that Volvo made a reliable product. I’m waiting to see what happens next. In between the two low oil situations, my coolant went drastically low and the “coolant low, shut engine down now” light came on. There was no leak on that either. I don’t believe the two low fluid levels are related.

by upgrading the software to tolerate lower oil volumes before displaying a warning message, and installing new dipsticks that read lower volumes as acceptable levels – Volvo has opted to shoot the messengers, rather than work the problem.
here’s a link to the technical journal that defines the issue and the steps the dealers should take.

the problem we have with the ‘messengers’ removed, is that we’re now operating our engines at lower than – what we were originally told – were their acceptable capacities. eventually, these engines will show the effect of this – premature wear and repair costs. personally, i’ll never buy another Volvo. i suggest you all let your dealer know your feelings on their response to this documented problem.

Volvo knows exactly how much oil is being lost between 7000 mile oil changes. the combination of increasing the base line volume and reducing the warning system/dipstick effectively hides the issue from the consumer. if this doesn’t qualify as fraudulent behaviour, what does?

My 2013 XC90 had a low oil light come on at 44,200 miles–5000 miles into a 10000 mile oil change. I’ve religiously taken my vehicle in for oil changes to the dealer. They told me today they had to order a new dipstick and I told my mom and brother it would probably be 3-4 inches longer than the original so it would go further into the oil. Now that I’m hearing about the ECM update, I really feel like it’s just a matter of time before this vehicle shuts down. I was hoping it would be my son’s first car in about 6 years, but I’m pretty certain it’s not going to last that long. I bought a Volvo because I thought it would last. I’m terribly disappointed.

My husband added a couple of quarts of oil and I didn’t give it much thought except to mention it to the service tech when i brought it in at 61,000 for it’s next scheduled service. The dealer documented my comment, did an oil change and sent me on my way. Less than 2,000 miles later the low oil message appeared again. This time I called the dealer and made an appointment to bring it down for what I thought was going to be an engine inspection and oil topoff. 3 days later I got my car back with a new dipstick and software update. I asked the service tech how this would fix an oil burning problem and he said “This is what Volvo told us to do.”. I let him know that i was concerned about the fact that my car was now out of warranty. He said “don’t worry, Volvo takes care of their customers”. I then asked him if he examined the engine at all. He said no, he did what Volvo told him to do. I finally asked him what the next step was if this doesn’t fix the problem. He mentioned a piston replacement. After that, I started doing some searches on the internet about this problem and found this site. Needless to say, I do not have a warm fuzzy feeling about my car. I got an online survey request from Volvo the other day asking about my recent service experience. I gave them an earful including a link to this site. I asked them for an extended warranty until this issue is fixed or an engine fix/replacement. I am waiting for their response.

After reading write up in consumer reports and various blogs on web, I took to dealer at 4900 miles and let them know I had added 1 qt of oil when the light had come on. They agreed and said it should not have burned a quart of oil. They said the Volvo fix was to install a new Breather Box. Replace Breather Box, filled oil to 5.9 liters and install latest ECM software.

Couple of months later when I was on my way to work, I got the message that oil is low. I came to office and i called the dealer and they told me to top it off. So I borrowed a car from my friend and I got 5 Quarts of oil and topped it off and it was full. I took it to the dealership the same day. They checked and told me that everything was fine and there are no issues prior reported. I thought it being a premium car there will be no issues. But again this weekend it happened when I was going on a trip. Luckily I was within city limits and I had 1 quart of oil in my car just in case. I put the oil in my car and drove it straight to the dealership. They gave me a loaner car and took it in. I am really upset after reading this blog as no one in the dealership told me about this problem. I have the receipt for this time and for the first time as I topped the oil myself I don’t have any form of document. Please let me know if I can talk to the dealer about Lemon law now or wait and see if it happens again?

Took car to dealer, they said it was a sensor issue, which they have changed and no other problems until Aug 2015 when it went on again. I was traveling so I put a quart of oil in and continued on. Well, it went on again last week. Volvo is now saying they will replace my engine or give me a “fair trade” with a bit of a bump (tbd) to buy a Volvo. Has anyone ever received a similar offer? (BTW our 2007 xc90 has given us no problems.)

Had oil issues dealer said were related to a blocked breather line (paid to fix) then a crank seal (paid to fix) and now I’m stuck with an oil consumption problem (no leaks) they tell me is normal for such high mileage. Am I being duped, or does this fit the bill of a known oil consumption issue?

The car was two quarts low the day we took her home, thinking it was a factory short fill we added two quarts. At 2900 miles the oil dip stick was at the last mark on the stick and two quarts were added which put it at the full mark but the oil was very dark and thick. We changed the oil and filter at home and found the filter plugged with burnt oil and a concerning amount of metal in the filter paper. So the dealer ( Sheppard motors ) on its first visit tells me it’s not leaking oil anywhere “no kidding” and the three other small items were not addressed at all.
So at this point she has been in three times for the oil consumption issue and still burning oil, we estimate that she has burned around 14 quarts of oil in 12K miles. ECU recal with new (longer) dip stick, valve cover chemical gasket with new charge air cooler boot and new spark plugs to replace the oil fowled originals. At this point the fuel mileage is way off and it misfires, the best part is the turbo lag in traffic so bad it’s hard to drive safely. The turbines in the turbos are covered in soot and the cats are half plugged. I am willing to give them one more chance to fix the oil consumption issue but at this point the turbos, cats and O2 sensors will all need to be replaced as well.
Volvo has one more repair attempt, if it fails it will be a buy back with us and never again. Now as for my Volvo dealer We have had to do our own research on this issue and present them with what needs to happen next per Volvo, not my job. I have been looked right in the eyes and lied to on several occasions by service representatives and have lost all confidence in this product at all levels. I well post the outcome with this and let y’all know how I like my New Lexas.

I filled it but I’m not sure what my options are at this point. What could I do about this? I contacted Volvo but they said there were no outstanding issues with this particular car and that it was out of warranty.

The car drove just fine until just prior to the scheduled 7000 mile oil change when the engine oil light came on. I called the dealer and was told to just add a liter of synthetic oil and bring the car in the next day. I complied and they performed the oil change and said to let them know if I had any more problems with low oil levels. The car is back with the dealer (3 weeks now) and the original report was that they were going to replace the pistons and rings and that would solve the problem. Well I checked with them today (6/8/2016) and was told that they were unable to get the parts from Volvo so they are now going to try and get approval to replace the engine! I have warrantee coverage up the wazoo and have already paid off half the value of the car. At this point I don’t want another of their problem vehicles. How can I get my money back ??!! Can you help?

She faithfully has the car serviced per recommended intervals. The oil light came a three days ago and required three quarts. We have the car at Volvo dealer now for the second time regarding this issue and were provided with a loaner both times. Today we get a call and are told the car needs new Pistons at a cost of 5,000 dollars! Like everyone else we are not pleased with this outcome. Is there a possible lemon law issue? Thank you.

The independent guy, BTW, STRONGLY rwcommends oil changed wvery 4000 miles as opposed to every 7500. This vehicle drove me from the GA/FL state line to WA and back in 2013. Last month, however, I made a 900 mile round trip–fresh oil–and in downtown Atlanta rush hour traffic, the Low Oil Level warning appears. The temp gauge read 101F, and a part if my mind wondered, Is the heat affecting engine performance? There was no knocking, no smell, no smoke–but I pulled into a parts store, let the cehicle cool down for 20 minutes, and checked the oil level. It was well below the LOW mark, with hardly a smudge on the dipstick! I poured in a quart of synthetic oil, and the level bumped up to just above LOW. So… In light of what I am reading in here, and given I am WAY outta warranty, am I heading fir trouble? Because I sure don’t have a brick of gold to dump into a new engine block. Over the last 4 months I have had to take the car in 4 times due to the oil light coming on (light warning oil low add liter/quart). The are going to replace the seals on the pistons. the work is covered under warranty, but is there any lemon law that would be applicable here?

The oil light flashed when I went around a corner last night. I checked the oil this morning before starting it and found NO OIL on the dipstick! I added a couple quarts, got a reading, then added a couple more, in total I put 5 quarts of oil in this car to get it in the normal range!! My last oil change was about 6 weeks ago and I added a quart soon after that, thinking the garage left it a quart short when the light came on. This car is great in every way, but this sounds like a major issue.

A year ago, I had to replace the engine (from an independent shop) because of the double-whammy excessive oil consumption AND no low oil indicator (software issue). I used an independent because my dealer, even after I opened a case with VCNA, quoted me $8000 for a used engine (not rebuilt) with 67k miles on it. My independent charged me $4600 for one with 26k on it. It’s running like a champ right now but I fear the same problem could happen again. The engine is now at about 61k. I’ve been in touch with the regional Aftermarket Sales person for Volvo, and they have denied any goodwill for work done by an independent. My question is simple: do I have a case to recoup my initial expenses for the replacement – even by an independent? Does the time past have any bearing? Judging from the number of cases that are happening with this engine, could a class-action suit be filed?

I’ve changed the oil obsessively every 5K miles with Mobile 1 synthetic (I kept receipts thankfully). At about 27K miles the low oil light came on and so my wife took it in and they said “software glitch” and gave us a free oil change, now 3K miles later the oil level is low so we’re taking it back to the dealer but bracing for a fight even though its under warranty. If a car burns some oil at 200K miles and 12 years that’s one thing, but after <2 years that's a real problem.

After spending about $10,000 on repairs I got rid of my 2010 XC60. I was tired of constantly bringing the car in and topping off the oil. I tried changing dealerships hoping the service would be better and would make a difference with no luck. I had to have that car towed in twice over the past few years. That car was a money pit.

Vehicle for last 12 months has required adding quart of synthetic oil between oil changes every 7,500 miles. I thought it was normal to burn oil like this. I have 110,000 on it and am thinking the engine may need to be replaced based on what I’m reading here. Have not taken it to the dealership yet. Do I likely have a case to make them make repairs at no cost or any alternatives here if they do not accommodate repairs? Thank you.

The Volvo dealer told me this was acceptable consumption as it is such a highly engineered auto. This situation has only gotten worse since I moved to a new place and now I add about 6 liters between changes. I told the local dealership, which had recently gone out of business, and every oil change they just told me to keep an eye on it and report back if it gets worse. I guess worse means I break down? Since the only dealership on Island had disappeared I’m not sure if there is anything I can do.

This is not an individual problem. This could be as big as the Audi class action where they had to extend the warranties up to 150,000 miles on the engines due to a major defect. Volvo is inconsistent how they handle this. Some people get new engines while others are told sorry. They also changed the oil spec on the car to synthetic oil. Volvo knows they have a major problem but won’t own up to it.

Been like this for 3 years 140000km I have a Ford bukie that works hard everyday with 290000km and I never need to top up oil the oil is all was ok till the next service. What causes the Volvo to use oil like this . I also have a BMW 325i that never need oil and it’s got the same km and it’s 5 years older.

Furthermore, if the car is within specs, they will not move forward with replacing parts. In the meantime, if this was your third repair attempt for the issue, you could be entitled to monetary compensation to reflect the diminished value of the car under Federal Law. I am in the same boat, after years of knowing my 2013 S60 was consuming oil, the dealer did nothing, always said that’s just the way it is.

Now the engine has internal damage at 127,000 miles. I religiously watch the oil level after I realized by the time Low Oil Pressure light comes on it is almost two-thirds low.

Since this was a new engine design we also bought a Geico 100,000 mile extended warranty. We do about 25,000 miles per year of mainly highway driving.
After about 90,000 miles we started getting the low oil light, and
adding oil. The dealer replaced the oil trap at around 96,000 miles. Fifty-two days and 4200 miles later we needed to add 5.75 quarts of oil. The dealer says that it would cost ~$6,000 to replace the pistons and rings, but GEICO has thus far refused to pay this. One of their arguments is that there are no bulletins for this particular Volvo model, and that the dealer hasn’t demonstrated that this would fix the problem.

I’ve just had pistons and rings done in my 2015.5 w/77k miles, covered under ext warranty, but I can’t get 40 miles from the dealership w/out engine lights coming on (check engine and guardian mode). I’ve been in three times now. Volvo of Annapolis offered me two free oil changes. Wow! I’ll pass!

It required going back to the same Volvo dealership four times for the same issue but they just installed a brand new engine in my car.

Brought it to Kundert Volvo in Hackensack NJ with 72k miles on the odometer for a compression test. Number six cylinder read 100 psi, about 30% below normal. The service manager told me that Volvo had been using poorly made piston rings that they had outsourced. He also said that since we hadn’t purchased the car from a Volvo dealer and that the warranty had expired he doubted that Volvo North America would do anything. They certainly wouldn’t acknowledge the problem. He recommended an anti friction additive at every oil change which does help somewhat.

He found a defective oil trap and also recommended some band aid fixes short term, but in the end after some research he found a Volvo Service Technical Journal #31216.5.0 describing the issue and recommended fix; new ring and piston replacement. To my surprise and disappointment as I read the revision history, the first issue was identified by Volvo in February of 2016 and it appears to affect many vehicles/engines from 2014 – 2016. The current revision I have is Issue #6 dated June of 2019. Right under the title in bold letters is, “Right first time in Time.” I’m really not feeling that! Bottomline, this is a known design flaw that has been dumped on the public and no one seems to be held accountable.

In July of 2020 with about 50,000 miles on the car, I noticed an oil light flicker, and I change it every 5,000 miles at the dealer or Oil N’ Go. The car was down 2.5 quarts of synthetic oil. Since that time, I have had to add a quart every 6 or so tankfuls of gas. About a month an a half after the first oil incident the car started and then stopped. The alternator belt had gotten tangled in the timing chain at about 55K. I had the silver maintenance program and Volvo of N/A said it didn’t apply. They said they would contribute $2,000, what I paid for the maintenance contract, and I paid the balance. The car runs well, but I continue to have to watch the oil level like a hawk, and I see that my issue is but one among many. I’ve called the local dealer, who have offered to spend money diagnosing the problem. The car doesn’t burn oil, and externally, a third party mechanic says the engine is dry with no signs of a leak. The above comment about ‘bad’ third party rings that allow oil into the cylinders makes sense to me. There should be a national recall on this unreliable engine in a luxury car that is sold based on its safety and reliability.

I have a 2013 Volvo XC60 T6 with 132,000 miles. Up until my last oil change, it wasn’t needing any extra oil between changes. Now, I am having to put a quart in every 400 miles or less. It’s not losing oil but burning it. Can I get any help for this or is there something that changed in the engine that can be fixed? Thanks for your help
