As an independant body shop I have seen a couple of these flow through my shop. Currently I have one in the shop that has been undergoing the identicle problem.

Beware - Ford has published a report that diagnosed the problem not in the paint, but in the metal (an iron contamination of aluminum panels). Repainting the panels will only result in having them to peel again down the road. Eventually it is possible that the entire body is contaminated and will peel as well.

At first I thought that this issue was due to poor workmanship of another body shop but As I have researched I am learning that this is a major issue.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, removing the paint down to the metal, sealing it and repainting is not a guarantee that it will not peel again, it is a contaminate in the metal not the paint.

If your vehicle is out of warranty it is most likely that you will get no voluntary assistance from Ford unless you can prove that you were having problems before the lapse of the warranty. However, it is possible if a class action suit is brought against them.

Good luck.

Vehicle owners have been winning around the country in small claims court on both the thin paint and aluminum corrosion issues. Check out the facebook page that is referred to in previous comments. Owners have won in California, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Jersey. The vehicles include both new and pre-owned, in and out of warranty, as well as vehicle previously painted by Ford. Additionally, owners in New York and Idaho had their vehicles repainted at no charge by the dealerships. The Idaho winner had a pre-owned 2003 Ford Escape that was painted at no charge. Check out the facebook site and take action.

WE HAVE RUST!!!!
2010, yes you read that right a 2010! Ford Expedition EL with rust on the liftgate. There has never been any damage to the vehicle, it has bubbling paint from the rust. Ford says that the vehicle, which we bought new, has a few hundred miles over the warranty. It is just now at 38,000. Don't think they have solved the rust issues from the past!

This is truly unbelievable! I just bought a 2003 Ford Escape one week ago. It had 2 large spots on the hood where the paint looked like it had flaked off, as well as other smaller spots (under back window, on sides). I dropped it off at the paint shop 3 days ago and just called them to see if it was ready to be picked up. He informed me that there was a major paint issue with this year/make/model vehicle and he's going to have to basically take the paint off of the entire vehicle, then repaint it. He said it's going to cause him A LOT more work. I'm sure I'll love seeing the bill when I get it. He suggested I call Ford but after reading all of these comments above, I don't really see the point other than to just notify them I'm another victim. (P.S. This is the 1st Ford I've ever bought...never again!)

Tony, that would make sense, but you have to understand that once you win in court you dont even have to fix the car. You have sued because your vehicle had an alleged defect and has lost value. The logical, but expensive, thing to do is for Ford to just fix the vehicles and keep the customers happy.
A lot of companies have hidden defects from the public for years because it was difficult for people to know it was happening. Now with the internet everyone knows what is going on. Companies like Ford better wake up to this fact before the negative feedback really hurts them. I think it is already happening. They went from 5th to 10th in customer satisfaction this year.
Why would you trust them to fix your car after you had to sue them???

Wouldnt it be financially beneficial if For just repainted all of these cars that win in court than to pay full retail paint jobs that the owners pay? It would be cheaper to setup paint shops and do it themselves than to reimburse everyone.

I have a 2006 Ford Explorer with 45,000 miles on it. I found the paint problem when I purchased it and told the dealer I wanted them to pay to fix the hood and repaint it and the fenders, they agreed. But now I find out that the paint problem is in the Aluminum hood, which is, according to Ford , Contaminated with Iron Oxide, before it was painted. I feel the only way to stop the paint peeling on the hood, is to purchase a New, Primed Steel Hood, aftermarket and have it paint to match the paint on the car? At least if the steel hood begins to rust and the paint lifts off, I know how to deal with it!!! This is my First and my Last Ford Product ever!!!!!!!!

I maintain a fleet of ford vehicle consisting of F series trucks and E series vans ranging in years from 1997 - 2006. 34 vehicle in total. 9 of which are in years of 2000-2005, all of those vehicles have paint pealing from hoods, roofs, tops of doors and backs of cabs. I have called the dealer on this issue, there response is " warranty is 3 year 36k miles". Short, simple and to the point. I have nothing good to say about Ford. When it comes time to purchase new fleet vehicles, they will not be from Ford.

Read my comments above. On that site you will find everything you need to know how to sue in small claims court. Ford just lost an appeal in court across the street from their world headquarters. They showed up with their high price legal team and lost to an ex customer who defended herself with help from people on the above site. I sued and beat them last year on my 08. It was nice to get a 5k rebate for the crappy paint job I paid for.

For those that have not joined....check it out on Facebook. You will find a lot of help here with paint issues. Many of us have one. One member beat Ford's lawyers in court this week. She had originally lost but appealed.

I have a 2005 Ford Expodeition. I am having the same problem bubbling on the hood and on the rear tailgate. I was considering getting it fix, until I noticed everyone driving the same model and make of my car having the same problems. Then to see this site it is horrible to have this go on and Ford not take care of this problem.

My 2000 Expedition is about to loose its roof and has major hood damage.
Bought it used in '05 with very low mileage in excellent condition. The bubbles began to appear on the hood in '09...Since last year its been all downhill.
What does a disabled widow do? I cant afford to have it fixed & certainly cant trade it in for something safe to drive!
Len , I will try to get you pics of the gaping hole in the front center of the roof. Can not drive much any more and now cant drive in the rain. I have owned Fords all my life beginning with a 64 mustang but there will NOT be another , even if I could afford it!

I have a 2008 expedition EL Limited and have found several spots on my gate that is bubbling. I also have noticed while cleaning the door jams that one of the door jams was not painted all the way.Me and my wife bought the expedition brand new in 2008 and have no problems with it except the paint issue.I went to ford and they said there was nothing they could do with it.My car has never been out of warrenty we bought the extended warrenty a month before the factory warrenty went out.I think it is sad that ford has been doing this since early 2000 and they know there is a problem but they keep doing it and getting away with it unless you want to take them to court.I think they should put out a recall.Spending 50k on a vehicle that the paint bubbles due to poor manufacturing should warrenty a recall alone.

I was stoped by a state troopre in Massachusetts and told that something was flying off my 2001 Ford Windstar. It was large chips of the paint from the roof and the back door. What can I do ? Is ford doing any thing for the costumer ? I just had this car recalled for the real axle that was fixed at Herb Chambers Ford in Westboro Massachusetts. The cruse control does not work and the break light stays on.

I own a 2001 F150 and a 2001 Expedition. Both have problems with the paint. I had the tailgate on my truck repainted a couple of years ago, but the last time I washed my truck paint began chipping off in pieces the size of baseballs.

I have a 2004 Explorer Sport Trac with the same issues. Had the hood fixed under warrany in 06. The rest of the truck was fine at that time. A few months after the warranty expired, the front fenders and roof have cracking in the paint. I wash, wax and keep the car in a garage so I know its not from the elements. Ford wont do anything to fix the problem, even though they see that the hood was fixed bc of cracking paint. Last FORD that I will buy!!

I have a 1997 Ford F 150 with some of the same paint problems. I purchased the vehicle brand new and have been the sole owner. A couple of years after I purchased the truck the paint clear coat) started coming off the rear left bed panel and the dealership to their credit paid for the repair. Over the years the clear coat has came off the s ame area that was repaired and also the hood and the top of the cab. I have taken very good care of the truck and it is clear that it is a defective paint job and ford refuses to do anything.I have been a Ford truck owner all my life with my first one being a 1968 F-100 but with the way they handled this I am very disappointed and may never buy another one. Let me know if there is ever a suit filed because I want to be a part of it.

I have a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer in satellite silver about a year ago I noticed the roof channels were peeling and the roof is rusting. I talked to service reps at a couple of dealers and I was told that there were no complaints that they were aware of, As a result of that I thought mine was an isolated case, Know I know different. Shame on Ford.

Long time Ford enthusiast. Now own 2 explorers, a 1996, and a 2002, Both vehicles have paint problems. The 96 has peeling paint on the roof in several spots. The 02 has galvanic corosion on the hood front where it meets the grill and also on the right front fender.

The molded trim around the bottom of the doors, etc. on the 02 Explorer gets streaked from rain leaving light colored, vertical streaks. The can be minimized by applying an off the shelf product, but there is at least an hours work each time on that alone adfter I wash the car.

I"m going to buy another car in the coming months and, if Ford will do somehting good for me, I might stick to Ford.
