Defect Alert – Subaru Impreza WRX Engine and Transmission Problems

The 1-800-LEMON-LAW hotline has been abuzz with Subaru WRX drivers calling in complaining about issues with their transmission and/or turbo engine. Problems include loss of power, check engine light, clutch noise, fluid leaks, and assorted transmission issues.

If your Subaru Impreza WRX is heading back to the repair shop repeatedly, or if the car has been in the shop for an extended period of time, please email us and share your problems.

We will be glad to discuss your situation with you and see if you qualify for recourse under the Lemon Law for your state or Federal Warranty Statutes.

    Recently bought a wrx car with 20,000 miles. Drove about a 1000 miles than my car went to mechanic for major transmision repairs (rebuild). Car was purchased from individual and has rebuild title. So dealer told me that waranty is void. I have read on net that wrx has transmision problems so I thought that could a factory defect. After car was repaired with oem parts 2 days later went back to repair shop… Thoughts?

          i purchased a new 2009 wrx. at 12000 miles it goes in and has a cracked clutch plate(clutch still doesnt seem normal). then at 25000 miles the transmission just fell apart. the car currently has 31000 miles and i just took it in complaining of rod knock but the mechanics refuse to admit to hearing any noise. im afraid my warranty is going to expire and im going to be stuck with what ever falls apart next.

            one question is if i save the paper stating i took the car in complaining of the engine problems and the engine doesnt fully fail until after the 36000 mile warranty would subaru be liable because they did not correct the problem when they could of?

              Also a heat sensor recently failed on the 2009 subaru which set off the engine light ,cruise control ,and traction control. they couldnt get my car in for 2 weeks because of how buisy the service department was. during the 2 weeks with the traction constantly off it unevenly wore the front tires. they also then replaced a ball joint due to failure again. then when i went to pick up the car they tried to sell me to front tires and claimed that the issues were seperate yet the tread wear has sompletley stopped sinced those issues were corrected.

                i have a 2011 wrx an only i have had it for bout 9 mouths i do have a few mods like intake,down pipe,catback,bov,tune but a few days ago i had to get the car to the shop an it was missfireing but i was told that they hear a nose comeing from my motor an that they fond some kind of metal thing but they dont know what it is an the toke the spark plug out an put a new one in out the number 2 cylinder an drove my car bout 15 mins an it started doin it again saying that the piston is hiting the spark plug an trying to say that it may be my mod that had something to do with it i never saw this befor and have been building cars/moding them far going on 8 years now.what do u think bout this i think its a defect

                  have a 2012 wrx. Throw out bearing and pressure plate were replaced at dealer because the car was whineing at 9000 miles .Got car back and the dealer ship broke off something from the turbo and said it was fine to drive . The car gas mileage dropped to 15 mpg and makeing loud ticking sounds louder then normal. Also car shifts funny and car makes a clicking sound when going in to 5th gear which it never did before i have to take it back to them to fix the turbo not really happy with the car want a new one they havent touched it was better when it whined.

                    have a 2012 wrx. after 4,000 miles my front tires were completely shot (inside of tire worn to cords). after fighting with subaru for tires they finally gave me new ones. (now they did align the vehicle twice already) was told they dont know why its doing that. now at 14,000 im already needing new tires and going in for a 4th alignment. my throw out bearing also went at 10,000. picked it up from the dealer after the 2nd alignment and clutch was so horrible.

                        I live in Puerto Rico and bought a 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX in October 2008. It has about 52K miles and powertrain warranty is up to 60K or 5 years, so it’s still covered.

                        Trebol Motors, which is the exclusive distributor and sole warranty service provider, doesn’t want to cover the repair of a broken center differential because, they say, this happens only if there is abuse. The broken diff caused damage to the transfer gears, which brings total repair cost to $2533.

                        I took the situation to the our government’s consumer protection agency and it’s pending inspection. To support my claim that my vehicle should be repaired under warranty, I’m searching for info on center differential related problems for Imprezas 2008+ models, particularly the WRX.

                        There’s a lot of talk about this kind of failure in online forums, but not in “official” sites, like yours or consumer related institutions. If you have record of this being a frequent problem, maybe it helps my case.

                          I bought a 2009 wrx from a dealer, as is. One month later I paid dealer for a new clutch package, @$1800. One hundred miles later I need a rebuild on my 5 speed manual tranny. First and 2nd and input shaft nearly stripped down to smooth. What is the deal with these trannys-any recalls?

                            I purchased a new 2013 WRX limited. At 10,000 miles engine started making a loud ticking. Checked oil and it was full. Called dealer and they said to bring it in to have a look. Dealer is 40 miles away. On the way the engine made a loud noise and stopped. Had the car towed to the dealer. They told me that I blew the engine and it was my fault?
                            They also said I must have over revved the car? Cant see how that is possible. They replaced the engine finally but now the car idle is not right. When you stop it drops down where it almost stalls. The dealer told me that there is no code when the check it out. The vehicle was purchased in NJ

                                  Have a 2012 WRX, bought used with 4000 miles now has 19000 miles. Car left us stranded when the battery died last weekend….I own a shop so I took it in to fully recharge the battery til I could get it to the dealer. Charged it up and performed oil change. 3 days later on my way home from picking up my son the engine started knocking on acceleration starting at about 2k rpm. Then today my wife took it to the dealer and when she got 5 miles away the car started loosing power and just died on her on the side of the interstate. The dealer called me back and said the motor is locked up tight, no apparent leaks, no over rev condition and oil is clean and up to level. So now they have to tear motor down for warranty claim is my guess. I’m gonna be scared to really get into this apparent “sports car” even with a new engine if this engine locked up after little to no abuse at all.

                                    At first they told me that I blew it up. After going to subreau of America they replaced the engine but now the idle issues are getting worse. When I go back they tell me that there is nothing wrong with it.

                                        I bout a 2011 Subaru WRX from a dealer. At 4500 rpm it has always hesitated. At 40000 miles the engine light came on. The code was saying the something with the ignition. I replaced the spark plugs. There is still a hesitation at 4500 rpm. The motor makes a funny sound when the clutch is engaged. I had it scheduled to replace some of the ignition parts to hopefully fix the engine light problem. A day before my appointment the clutch goes out. A week later to find that the thro out bearing fell apart and shredded the shaft it goes on. This means I will have to replace the transmission. The mileage is now 65000. Also for the last easily 20000 miles my oil level keeps dropping and I have to always add oil. The car does not leak or smoke.
                                        I am frustrated. There has been one thing after another. Now I have a couple thousand dollar repair for the transmission and I still haven’t fixed the engine problem..missing oil, engine light with the ignition/cylinder problems.

                                          2014 WRX. 5,6xx miles. engine failure. no modifications. no sign of oil starvation or over reving so no issue with being covered under warranty BUT the car has been in the service department since 05/20/14. today makes 25 days out of service. by monday 06/14 it’ll be 27 and im sure it will not be ready then because they are still waiting on a part that was supposed to be expedited to them a week ago. when they finally get it they still have to work to rebuild the engine. i bought it in NY. >:/

                                              2012 WRX, I Purchased the car about 5 months ago from a Subaru dealer in NY with 21,000 miles. I purchased the 7 year 7,000 mile warranty (from birth of car) for 2500$. I bought the car from the dealer with an aftermarket intake and exhaust system that was put in by the previous owner. After 5 months the clutch started slipping and so i decided to do a transmission service (drain transmission fluid etc.) A friend of mine owns a mechanic shop and so i allowed him to do the service as opposed to paying subaru 250$ for such a job. When he pulled the magnetic drain plug he found 2 large peices of metal about an inch long and half an inch wide (parts of a gear). Driving the car felt exactly the same as it had did the day i left the dealer except for the slipping in 3rd, 4th, and 5th gear. Originaly I figured the clutch was on its way out and being that it is a wareable part i agreed to fix it on my own but now that i know there is a problem with the transmission i am sceptical about the whole situation. I dropped my car at the dealer because i can not drive it the way it is and they claim to have no loaners to lend me. When i spoke to the service manager on the phone he was nothing more than rude and explained to me how subaru of america would probably not cover the issue at hand. He based his decision on what the peices (which i had saved from the trani service) looked like and his experience at subaru. I thought these were tough cars, i only drive it to work, and on snowboarding trips about 3 times a year. I feel as if i have been taken advantage of by the dealership and im paying close to 30,000$ for this car! In the past ten years i have only owned manual transmission vehicles and i am an experienced commercial driver, whom spends at least 9 hours a day shifting gears through the five boroughs. If Subaru of America does not want to cover this issue i think the dealer should. Also, the first week i purchased the car i took it to my friend (the mechanic) and he pointed out how the tires should have never passed inspection. I immediately went back to the dealer and explained to the used sales manager the issue about the tires. He told me to come back on the weekend so that his service team could take a look and make a decision on if i really needed new tires. That night I got a flat on the highway and had to find out the hard way that there was no tire iron in the trunk. I waited 3 hours for a tow truck to bring the propper tool and missed the night shift at work! The next day i walked into the dealership and addressed my issue with the receipt of the tow truck and the tire iron, the manager looked as if he knew he was wrong and immediately asked me, would you like summer tires or all seasons? I think this dealership skips many of their procedures when it comes to servicing and selling used cars.

                                                Put 8000 miles on my used certified 2010 WRX. Fully stock, never abused, driven as a highway commuter car. Transmission jerked one day when backing out of parking space. Since then have heard a repeated clicking noise in transmission. Brought to dealership, they “couldn’t identified the noise.” I persistently explained to them the noise and finally they “heard it.” Made very clear that I needed to know the warranty would cover any work going forward, they said yes it is. They pulled transmission apart only to tell me the transmission is essentially destroyed. This didnt make any sense since the car drove perfectly fine. They then proceeded to tell me the damages are indicative of abuse. I was dumbfounded, Ive never ever abused this vehicle. Since they claimed abuse they could then get away with telling me the repairs are not covered under warranty. I refuse to pay for any work because Ive never done anything but baby the car in the 1 year Ive owned it. The car has been sitting at the dealership with no transmission for 3 weeks now. They told me I have to pursue it with Subaru directly and their hands are tied. My car is in their dealership garage and their hands are tied?!?! I am now carless, have to rely on other to get to me job every day and cant do anything in the middle of the summer. All I can do now is call and email and hope someone gives the dealership the okay to make the repairs.

                                                  Purchased the car brand new in Jan 2014 and before I made my first car payment; had to get a new engine according to Subaru dealership because a rod bearing went bad so I was without my car for almost 2 full weeks.(That was with only 3000 miles on the new car). Then roughly 3 months later, check engine light came on. Had it cleared, came on again in 2 days; had a sensor replaced and then the Check Engine Light came back on that same day the sensor was replaced. I am getting tired of having to take time out of my schedule to keep making these trips to have my car taken care of. Can you help me?

                                                      I have a 2013 wrx and it has 14,000 miles and it and recently spun a rod bearing. I bought it and new and is still under warranty. It has been in the dealership for 2 months and counting. can lemons law be applied? They refused to give me a loaner car for the first month until they saw all the bad reviews i put out on the internet about them.

                                                          I have a 2013 wrx bought brand new around 5000 miles engine started knocking anything over 2000rpm brought it back to dealership after a week with no car finally got a loaner n they said I had a bent connecting rod took another week to fix. An I’m almost at 12000 miles an it did the same thing an again I have to wait a week for a loaner it’s rediculus syracuse ny

                                                              I have a 2008 Subaru WRX. Bought it Subaru Certified Pre-owned with 18,xxx miles (at end of 3 year lease) in December 2010. Never had a Subaru, but owned manual trans car before. Got 6yr./60,000 mile warranty as part of the deal. Since the time I took it in for its 1st warranty service, I told them I heard a noise in the engine that didn’t sound normal/right. They always assured me that Subarus are noisy like that and “it’s normal”.

                                                              At the end of last year, the warranty ran out. Immediately, the noise turned into a much louder clatter mostly heard between 2000-3000 RPM. Now it’s getting worse still. I don’t beat on my car. I drive carefully. Never race/redline.

                                                              When the noise got louder (after warranty ran out), I called Subaru Corporate in New Jersey. The gave me the run around and didn’t return calls when they said they would. Finally, I got the guy back on the phone after several days, he told me that there was no record of my complaints about the noise on any invoice from any service I had had performed while under warranty!

                                                              I feel as though I haven’t been able to enjoy my car to the fullest since I’ve owned it, and especially now, as I’ve always been afraid the engine would blow or something equally catastrophic would happen. So I limp my car around where ever I need to go constantly worried it will just fail at any moment.

                                                                2009 wrx. Owned since new. Now almost 60,0000 miles. Never abused, daily driver. Same problem as Adam above. Backing out of garage and car jerks. Drive it forward and jerks again. Had it towed to Dealership 30 miles away. Dealership said all the gears in transfer case are destroyed and all bearings ang gears need to be replaced. $2050. I think the throw out bearing is next. Garbage from Subaru. Don’t buy a wrx 2008, 2009, 2010. Subaru of America was not helpful and unfortunately rude about this issue. Last Subaru I will ever buy.

                                                                  I have a 2008 Subaru Impreza 2008 I bought in 2011 at 26000 miles. I had to replace the clutch at 29000 miles and was told the warranty would not cover it. Paid 1300 to replace it. Recently, after 86000 clutch went out again had to replace again now I am having issues with ignition, starter and could be rings, not sure. It will not start and last time it was starting thee was smoke. Taking to a certified Subaru repair shop next week. I have driven standards for over 30 years and have never needed a clutch. Not happy with Subaru I will never buy another.

                                                                    taken excellent care of. i recently had an issue with the transmission popping out of first gear while decelerating in parking lots. the car only has 14k on it. i took it to the dealer who did not want anything to do with me or my car to have it repaired. it took several weeks of emails and calls to Subaru of america just to get them to look at it and when they finally did they said the repair was not covered under warranty because it is related to abuse. i have never raced or abused this vehicle at all i just drive it to work and back and half of the time my kids are with me. after fighting with Subaru and the dealer fighting with me believe it or not they agreed to cover the repair but they will not provide a loaner. the car has been at the dealer now for 32 days waiting for the repair and there is no end in sight.
                                                                    a company i once talked so good about stabbed me in the back and is making life very difficult for me and my family.

                                                                        Have a 2013 Subaru WRX .. I’m second owner..only have had the car for 7 month….Just last month my cars transmission went.. Didn’t have first and second gear … Took it to my local Subaru deal and they said the aftermarket exhaust cause the problem… After they dropped the tranny and found the clutch and plate were bad … They were NOT Warrneting it … Still under the 3/36,000 warrrenty … SOA took two weeks to come look at the car ..now they have had the car for over a month..
                                                                        SOA said the car was altered and tuned .. That voids the warrrenty . I asked how do you know if it wasn’t the first owner… They said they didn’t know…and didn’t care , that I had to pay for it $4000…THANKS Subaru..

                                                                          Wow I have a 2013 wrx and experiencing trouble putting it into certain gears. The transmission is horrible and the engine is a ticking time bomb. I have almost 25 thousand miles on it with a basic intake and down pipe with a basic tune that runs better than the stock tune. Subaru is knowingly making the wrx that are spinning bearings, throwing rods, and have bad piston rings…yet they are going to just say “oh it’s the mods”. Well if it’s just “mods”, then why are so many people having the SAME problem. First and last time I buy a SUBARU!!

                                                                            2012 WRX- Bought in June with 44,000 miles. Drove off the lot and one headlight was not working. Drove it literally across the street popped the hood and found a cob job wiring set up. Took back to the dealer and they fixed the problem. With in the first month clutch started slipping and took me 3 trips back to the dealer, where on the 3rd time I had to do a ride along with the mechanic to prove the clutch was slipping, and only then did I recieve a new clutch. All covered under warranty. I purchased an extended warranty when I bought the car which ran out about 8,000 miles ago. Last week I got off the highway pulled up to the red light and it stalled at the light. Started right back up but at 2000rpm engine was knocking really bad. drove about a mile and all the lights and whistlea came on. Had the car towed from there to the dealership and they said oil level was good but when they drained it the found metal all in the oil. I don’t best or race my car. It’s at 94,000 miles now my husband had always changed the oil regularly as well as added some when needed before oil changes were due. My husband graduated from MMI and is a mechanic himself so he has always changed the oil in our vehicles himself. The dealership says I need a completly new engine at $8500 for a vehicle I’ve owned less than a year and have taken good care of. I still owe $22,000 on the car and that’s the payoff amount. They called yesterday saying Subaru is requesting oil change records and because my husband has always changed the oil himself I do not have such records. Nor have I kept a receipt for any oil/filters we have purchased to change our own oil. I don’t know what to do but feel strongly that Subaru should warranty the new engine. Or the dealership. When I asked how this happened or what cause it they said “that’s a good question” and have yet to tell me how metal ended up in my oil and caused the need for an $8500 repair. The dealership suggested I trade in my wrx but told me I would only get $1500 for it as it sits!! I still owe $22,000! What can I do. Please help.

                                                                              2008 WRX- Bought the car 4 months ago. BY THE WAY THIS CAR HAS AFTERMARKET MODS 59,500 miles on it. By 61500 miles, I took it in to get my turbo looked at because it was making a weird noise. Turns out bearings were shot and a leaky seal which was causing oil to go down into my exhaust. And my small block got taken in the process. Somehow. So I get a new turbo and engine(thank god for extended warranty’s) and have had nothing but problems since. They put the mods right back on the NEW engine, which is a big no no, but hey they’re suby, if they do it its okay right? wrong. So I have 3k on the new engine and its going through a fairly heavy amount of coolant and oil. I took my dipstick out and tasted my oil(very weird i know) and it tasted sweet. Coolant leaking into my oil? Head gasket? The timing is off, it shifts different, the whole sound of my car is different, I have a constant smell of gas even though I have no holes in my exhaust, it backfires anytime I get on it and I have taken in 3 times for little things and leaks and its come back with the problems. I have the opportunity to get out of this car, but im debating if I should.

                                                                                I have gotten told that Subaru should not have allowed me to drive off that lot with those parts on my car still as it will wear down the engine very quickly since its not broken in. Then after 1k miles(onces its broken in) I go in and get it tuned and THEN they put the mods on. They have not brought it up and it has been in the shop since its been broken in and still nothing has changed. It has been in the shop more than I have had it in my possession since I have gotten it.

                                                                                  I have a 2014 WRX with no performance mods and recently I had spun a rod bearing. My car has 18,XXX miles on it. I brought it to Belknap Subaru in Tilton, NH and now they are replacing engine components.

                                                                                  Apparently when they first looked in the engine, they took the clutch out and said that the clutch was cracked, blueing, and severely damaged. When I argued with the service representative that there’s no way that I burnt a clutch out that fast (I have been driving standard for 4 years now and do not take my car to the track) he told me that the only way this is possible is through mis-use.

                                                                                  Now, I’m not a mechanic, but it is my inclination that if the rod bearing is spun at only 18,XXX there must be some sort of defect effecting the engine and its components. So, I attempted to get the higher-up Subaru of America representative’s phone number or email so I can contact him/her but I was told I am not allowed to speak to them.

                                                                                  Is this a normal claim or is something fishy going on here?

                                                                                    I am currently stuck with a faulty clutch and a failing transmission cause of it. I bought my 2012 wrx used with full warranty and the car had a throw out bearing issue, so under warranty I had the issue fixed. Now after the repair the clutch shudders, makes noise and the throw out bearing has failed twice. I was told after my repair by the service manager it was my fault and subaru wouldn’t fix the issue anymore and now the car is 10x worse after their supposed repairs. I am now fearful that my wrx is going to crap out and I’ll be stuck footing the bill.

                                                                                        I have a 2014 WRX with the premium package and less than 13,000 miles, bought it brand new, broke in correctly, and have had the certified dealership perform all standard maintenance. I also have no mods on this vehicle and do not take it to any tracks or races. The engine started making odd noises 4 weeks ago and completely died while I was en route to the dealership. Turns out I spun a rod bearing, which while I had the service tech on the phone during my drive to them he said he already knew that it was the second cylinder rod bearing and that they would have to give me a whole new engine, turbo, oil and fuel lines, and pretty much anything else from the block down. They are down two maintenance bays so I am without my car until after Jan 1, though I am still making payments on it while it is getting fixed. They did give me a loaner from the dealership so I’m not without transportation which is nice. So far Subaru hasn’t offered anything more than a new engine, but I’m at risk of losing money when I go to re-sell this thing on the secondary market because who will want to buy a WRX that already had one engine blow out on it. I’m going in today to discuss a replacement vehicle with them because I’m already out 2 months payment on this car and don’t want to deal with driving and selling a potential lemon.

                                                                                            Located in NE, where I see it says on your state by state lemon laws that 40 days out of service meets the definition of lemon. Wonder if that would apply to my situation as they’ve had my car since Nov. 1 and don’t foresee it being back to me until early/mid January, though it is partly due to them remodeling and being down 1/2 their maintenance bays.

                                                                                                I have a 2010 WRX, completely stock with 73k miles on it. Engine began making a ticking noise at high rpms (around 5k rpms) for the past month. Yesterday this turned into a knocking sound that starts at 2rpms. I checked the oil and it was completely gone, but no apparent leaks. Took it to Pep Boys and they said it might be something with the crankshaft, but they won’t be sure until they get in there, which would cost me anywhere for $2k to $6k depending on if i need a completely new engine. Any issues with this that might be covered?

I started having problems with it shortly after the purchase. I took it to the dealership under the factory warranty and they supposedly fixed it. Well, about 3 weeks ago, the clutch wore out and the transmission is damaged as well. Am I SOL?

I have a 2013 wrx, was bought brand new and now has 45,XXX miles. Through out the time I have had the car it seems like the battery has been messed up, car randomly not starting but when bringing it in to the dealership to get an oil change everything checks out. Also, the clutch has been hard to get into gear randomly. I brought my car in because I was driving home from the airport and it was making a loud slapping noise under the hood. This was on a Wednesday. I borrowed my buddies car Thursday and set up an appointment on Friday. Drove it there and they gave me a loaner car. Also the head light went out and I replaced it but it still didn’t work. That’s a side bar though. They got back to me on Monday saying they looked at the engine and it had zero oil. I was excessively due for an oil change. They told me they will either have to tear down the engine which might cost me 2500 dollars even though I purchased the extended warranty. They didn’t know if it was covered. Or they might just replace the engine. They decided to just replace the engine. While taking apart the engine they decided that my clutch NEEDS to be replaced as well, oh and my battery and they said all I need to do is change my light bulb. Even though I just put a brand new one in. I feel like the clutch should not be going out this early or the engine. It’s been almost 3 weeks now and I still don’t have my car. I would like to know if this is a case of a lemon and if you can help me. Only 45,XXX miles and I don’t think there should be his much wrong. Please help. Happy holidays. Thank you.

                                                                                                          I just deliverd my 2014 WRX to the dealership. It all began yesterday when I started the vehicle and heard a rapid succession of knocks. Bob Baker in Carlsbad Ca said I need a new engine.
                                                                                                          They were very nice and provided a loader subaru but I’m concerned about my resale value. It’s a 2014 WRX hatch with 18000 miles which I have absolutely babied since the day one. I purchased the vehicle new, broke it in properly and have been idling it around town for almost 3 years. It’s obviously a defective engine. Will the value of the veicle go down?

                                                                                                            My Suburu WRX STI, been given me problems since I finance the car Dec. 23.2015, the manager the insistent didn’t want to be bothered once there got me to finance the vehicle. They had made so many inquirys and I call so they could stop the inquirys since i had Santander consumer. And they just completely didn’t want to hear anything but that is finance the car as is. I feel like I’ve been rob and don’t think I don’t deserve this kind of treatment. I’m a 83 year old male tat serve over 35 years in the air force and one in the veitnam and took them my DD-214 which I had no down payment and they ask and took $4,500.00 down and refuse to check the car out for safety and told me it was as is and they could really do anything. I’m now having problems with the car and it’s really a serious problem if I get into and accident. I’ve call may insurance to see if they could help with the problem it has with the knicking so and they reply was that if it was ware and tear it would come out my pocket. I will get a hold of the lemon law and also the better business Bureau to see if they could help me in some kind of way
